WHAT IS JOE'S GARAGE ?
In the fall of 2008 PAT TOWNE directed the World Premier production of Frank Zappa's JOE'S GARAGE -- a rock musical adapted from the concept album created by the legendary Rock & Roll icon Frank Zappa.
The Rock & Roll musical was adapted by Towne and Michael Franco, and was produced by Towne, Franco, and Charlie Otte for The Open Fist Theatre Company in Hollywood, CA, with permission of Gail Zappa and the Zappa Family Trust.
One of the most narrative and wickedly satirical albums of his canon, Frank Zappa's JOE'S GARAGE scrutinizes a world in which the government controls the masses by making music a crime.
Masked in the simplicity of a high school musical, the play attacks the concept of government surveillance of its own citizenry, the sexual escapades of the Catholic Church, the rapaciousness of Scientology, the avarice of the music business, the self-serving nature of journalism, mindless consumerism, and bad boy Rock & Roll behavior in general.

Frank Zappa's JOE'S GARAGE sold out every night of its run in Hollywood, and was attended by people from around the world who flew to LA for the sole purpose of seeing the show.

The production received two LAWeekly Awards, nominated for several others, and was nominated for Best Musical and Best Director of a Musical at the 20th Annual Ovation Awards in Los Angeles.
