WHAT IS BAT BOY THE MUSICAL?

BAT BOY THE MUSICAL originally came to life at the Actor's Gang in Los Angeles in 1997. With book by Keythe Farley & Brian Flemming and music and lyrics by Lawrence O'Keefe, this giggly Rock n Roll musical went on to gain a cult following and to have a successful Off Broadway and West End run.

In February 2025 The Open Fist Theatre Company brought the show back to LA for the first time in almost 30 years under the direction of Pat Towne with choreography by Jennifer Maples -- the same team that brought Frank Zappa's JOE's GARAGE to Open Fist in 2008.

Inspired by the dubious Bat Boy stories published in the 90's tabloid Weekly World News BAT BOY THE MUSICAL imagines the half bat half boy creature is alive and discovered in a small town in West Virginia. As Bat Boy tries to become more like a presentable human boy, the townsfolk are manipulated into believing he is responsible for the town's misfortunes -- like murder and dead cows.

Mr. Towne's production of BAT BOY THE MUSICAL had an extended run at Open Fist and the show went on to win several 'Scenie" Awards including Best Production of a Musical and Outstanding Direction of a Musical.
